Compression is strongest at the ankle, where the stockings provide 18mmHg of pressure, before gradually reducing towards the thigh. This graduated action supports venous blood flow and makes the stockings suitable for people with limited mobility, including continued use following hospital discharge where anti-embolism stockings have been recommended.
