Step 1 – Assess the Situation

Check that the person can bear some weight and is able to cooperate with the transfer.
Make sure the person understands what is about to happen and is willing to participate.
If the person is too weak, confused, in pain, or unable to stand, a hoist or other equipment may be more suitable.

Step 2 – Choose the Right Belt

Use a belt that is the correct size for the person (many handling belts are adjustable).
Check that the belt is in good condition with no tears, damage, or worn handles.

Step 3 – Position the Belt

Help the person into a seated position (on the bed, chair, or wheelchair).
Place the belt around the person’s waist — not too high (chest) or too low (hips), as this can be unsafe.
