A wheelchair ramp is a sloped surface that allows wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and other wheeled aids to safely access raised areas like steps, doorways, or vehicles. Ramps provide a smooth, accessible route where stairs or high thresholds would otherwise pose a barrier.

There are several types, including:

• Threshold ramps – for small steps or door lips

• Folding ramps – portable and easy to store

• Telescopic ramps – adjustable in length for flexibility

• Channel ramps – narrow, dual-track ramps for wheelchairs or scooters

• Suitcase ramps – lightweight, portable ramps that fold like a suitcase for transport

Each type is suited to different environments, whether for use at home, on vehicles, or while travelling.

Consider where and how the ramp will be used. Key factors include:

• Height of the obstacle (to calculate required length)

• Weight capacity (to support the user and wheelchair)

• Ramp width (wide enough for the wheelchair)

• Portability (does it need to fold or be easily carried?)
  Use an appropriate gradient—ideally 1:12 for public access and 1:6 for short private ramps.
