The Grampian Mattress Overlay is a high-specification alternating pressure system designed to assist in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers, particularly for individuals assessed as being at very high risk. The overlay is constructed with 18 individual transverse air cells, each with a height of 5 inches (115 mm). These cells operate on an alternating one-in-two cycle, meaning every other cell inflates and deflates in a timed sequence. This process regularly redistributes pressure across the body, reducing prolonged pressure on any single area and promoting healthy blood flow to vulnerable tissues. This alternating action is key in preventing the development of pressure damage, particularly over bony prominences such as the sacrum, heels, and hips.

The Grampian is intended for use on top of a standard hospital or domestic foam mattress, transforming a basic sleep surface into a dynamic pressure-relieving system without the need for a full replacement mattress.
